Lithuania may not be as popular compared to other European countries but it still as beautiful in terms of places to visit, the historical structures and the nightlife. Although you can enjoy Lithuania in many cities in the country, none of them would represent the country better than Vilnius, the country’s capital.
Because it’s the capital of Lithuania, getting into the city is very easy. Vilnius International Airport receives flights from different countries in the region. Train coming from Warsaw, Poland also arrives in Vilnius once a day. The airport is relatively far from the main district, but buses (the cheaper one) and taxis are available at the airport.
The main reasons you should be visiting Vilnius are the historical structures. If you are interested in history, then the city should give you more than enough information about Lithuania.
The numerous churches (Cathedral, St. Ann, Sts. Francis and Bernadine) and the castles (Presidential Palace, Gediminas Castle) all bear witness to what has happened in Lithuania and would have significant effect to the future of country.
There are also Synagogues and Orthodox Churches that should never be missed. You will need a tour guide to visit these places and know all their facts. Of course there are museums where you can have more information about those structures and Lithuania in general (Lithuanian National Museum, and Museum of Genocide Victims).
Getting around the city is a lot easier through buses. But you have to make sure you get the right one since they are only tagged with letters and numbers.
