Polite Tourists are Welcome to Finland

Traveling to Finland can be a lot of fun. However, there are a few things that you have to remember whenever you are there as a tourist. Today we are going to talk about manners and other topics of respect. After all, you do not want to go to Finland and get into a fight with someone, because you were being disrespectful.

The first thing to note is that Finland is a place where people are pretty laid back when it comes to attitude and manners. This goes for things that you say, as well as what you wear. It is very unlikely that any visitor is going to offend Finns by accident. Most of the time all you need to use is your common sense.

On that same note you do need to keep a few things in mind. First of all, people in Finland are not much for small talk. So do not expect to hear things like “your are welcome” and “thank you” very often. In fact, the Finnish language does not even have a word for please, meaning that they will very commonly leave it out when they are trying to speak English. Thus, you should not take this as being rude.

Also, Finland lacks distinction between “she” and “he.” Sometimes this can lead to some very confusing remarks. The main thing to remember is that loud laughing and/or speaking is not common in Finland. Thus, this is something that could irritate many people from Finland. Many times, silence is part of the conversation in Finland, so do not take this as a sign of hostility.
