Svalbard, a unique European destination

If you’re looking for an entirely different experience for your vacation, head on to Norway and book a flight that goes directly to Svalbard. The name of the territory literally means “cold coasts” as it is located between the main land of Norway and the North Pole. The summer in this place averages at five degrees centigrade while below zero is just a normal condition during winter.

The airport of Svalbard is in Longyearbyen which is also its capital. Because of recent influx of tourists, small hotels are now found in the city. The capital has a beautiful coast that you can visit and have a nice bonfire at night. There is a great possibility that you’ll see a good variety of sea birds while you’re there. A good number of polar foxes could also be seen when you go around the edges of Longyearbyen.

One of the tourist attractions of Svalbard is also its industry. There are numerous coal mines around the territory that you can visit. However, the coal mines that you can visit are the closed ones as the commercial coal mines are still off limits to tourists and visitors. Most of the hotels in the city could help you find the tour company in charge.

Travelling around the city is very easy. You can tour around the coast lines with an available boat, rent a car, bus or even go on a bike if you end up in a camp site.

Last but not the least; the Svalbard Museum is a structure that should not be missed. Although it’s not structurally significant on the outside, the inside of the museum will give you a lot of information regarding Longyearbyen and Svalbard in general.
